Maitland and District Development Association (MDDA)

 Our Mission:

The mission of the MDDA is to support the socio-economic well-being and development of Maitland and the surrounding district.

Our Story:

The MDDA was formed by a group of passionate community members more than 20 years ago to encourage economic development and support the many small businesses in our district.

Early in our history, we took on the challenge of saving an important historic building in the district: the Selma School.  With significant local and government fundraising and many hours of donated labour, the school was reclaimed and renovated. The building was renamed the Selma School Cultural Centre and has been the home of Gallery 215 for almost 20 years.

The MDDA also took ownership of Dawson Dowell Park and Public Wharf to ensure it continued operating as a community asset. The park is now part of the Municipality of East Hants but continues to house Beyond the Wharf Artisans, our local craft and artisan shop.

 Our Board:

Our Board of Directors is made up of local community members with interest in the socio-economic success of our region.  You can contact the Board by emailing mdda@gmail.com for more information. We are always looking for new members.

 Our Events:

The MDDA depends on fundraising events and activities to support the ongoing maintenance, repair and development of our properties and initiatives. Our signature events include:

  •  The Maitland Winter Festival. You can check our Events page for the most current details.

  • Cheesecake at the Gallery

  • Quiche and baked bean take-out supper

Gallery 215 runs out of the former Selma School which was purchased and restored by the MDDA.

The wharf at Dawson Dowell Park is a great place to watch the Tidal Bore.
